Smokers restricted on Aeroflot flights

Aeroflot moves to non smoking on short flights

Published: 9/20/1999

Following international trends, Aeroflot has announced that all of its flights of less than two hours' duration, will be non-smoking. On 15th May 1999, 13 flights were given a non-smoking status. Now, there are over 30 non-smoking flights in the Aeroflot's schedule on routes to the CIS, Baltic States and within Russia. These flights are operated by Tu-134s, Tu-154s, and Boeing-737s. According to the airline, there are no plans to introduce the ban on transcontinental flights. It contends that its decision is in line with the company's efforts to improve its service culture. While westerners may approve, Aeroflot risks alienating its primary clientele: Russian smokers, who appreciate the choice of smoking flights, regardless of how unhealthy this may be. Around 75% of Russian males smoke.
