Unexpected turn to Chilean fighter tender

Gripen may find itself in competition with MiG and Sukhoi in Chile

Published: 9/20/1999

According to the Novaya Gazeta, Chile has reportedly shown interest in acquiring Russian MiG and Sukhoi fighters, following a recent visit to Moscow by the head of its Air Force. Swedish officials contend that the Chilean interest in Russian alternatives is merely a ruse to lower the price of the contract for its JAS-39 Gripen. While conceding that the contract for the delivery of MiGs to Malaysia, which Russia unexpectedly won in 1996, had also been thought unlikely. Sweden's aspirations may also be undermined by “the Pinochet factor”, given that the SAAB company assembles fighters for export with British Aerospace, who are responsible for 45% of content orders. It had hitherto considered its major rivals to be the USA and France.
