Final terms still to be decided

Despite earlier reports Ukraine/Russia Tu-160 and Tu-95 deal still awaits completion

Published: 9/20/1999

Despite recent reports no final decision has yet been made on the transfer of Tu-160 and Tu-95 strategic bombers from the Ukraine to Russia(www.concise.org 5th August 1999). The head of the Russian Air Force, Colonel General Anatoly Kornukov predicts that a final decision may be in late September and confirmed that close inspection had shown that most of the bombers concerned are in operable state. The deal, when finalised, will be used as a means of enabling Ukraine to reduce Kiev's energy debts to Russia and Turkmenistan. According to Thor Bakai, Chairman of the Naftohaz Ukrayiny (Oil and Gas of Ukraine), Moscow and Kiev have at last agreed the price for the bombers, to help offset a debt now amounting to over $1 billion. Out of the Ukraine's fleet of 40 heavy bombers, Moscow wants to acquire eight Tu-160s and two Tu-95s. The price of one aircraft has been quoted, as anything between $25m to $75m.Bakai would not disclose a final figure, saying only: “We have made a deal at prices that existed seven years ago.” It seems likely that Turkmenistan will also be repaid in military hardware.
