Substantial Indian contracts for Russia

Indian Navy has Russian spending spree of over $200 million

Published: 9/15/1999

The state arms exporting agency, Rosvooruzheniye, is negotiating with India to upgrade the Indian Navy's Il-38, Tu-142 and Ka-28 with the St Petersburg based Leninets ASW system, the Sea Dragon. The system is apparently being developed in parallel with a similar system for the Russian Air Force, which Rosvooruzheniye maintains, will reduce development costs for both countries. Additionally the Indians are negotiating with Rosvooruzheniye for the acquisition of six additional Tu-142Ms maritime reconnaissance aircraft to add to their fleet of eight aircraft (Tu-142MK-A 'Bear-F' Mod 3) currently in service. The contract reported to be worth $200 million if concluded successfully, will involve the delivery of the Sea Eagle anti ship missile equipped aircraft over the next three years.
