Balkan's new owners order three Boeing-737s to replace Tu-154s
Published:
9/15/1999
On 7th September 1999, Israel's Zeevi group, the new owner of Bulgaria's national carrier, Balkan Airlines, announced that it plans to lease three Boeing-737s from General Motors Capital Services, a subsidiary of General Motors, for use on international routes in Europe. Viktor Melamed, spokesman for Balkan Airlines, said that the three 148-seat aircraft would replace ageing Tupolev Tu-154s in the airline's fleet. He added that the company hoped to have them in Sofia by the end of the month and that large aircraft would be leased at a later stage for long-distance flights. In July 1999, Zeevi Holding Ltd. bought 75% of Balkan Airlines for $150m and pledged to invest $100m in the company over the next five years.
