Boeings for AZAL

Published: 11/21/1997

The Azeri national carrier Azarbaijan Khavo Yollari, also referred to as Azerbaijan Airlines or AZAL, is reported to have reached agreement with Boeing on the purchase of two 757-200 airliners. AZAL is also known to have negotiated with Airbus Industrie on two A310-200s. Relying on financial support from the Azerbaijan Government, the company wants to acquire six western airplanes by the year 2000. Currently, AZAL's inventory consists mainly of Soviet-built Tu-154, Tu-134 and Yak-40 jets, supplemented by two B-727-200 passenger airliners and two B-707-320C freighters. On a regular basis these fly from Baku to Dubai, London, Istanbul, Moscow, Tel Aviv and Teheran. In addition, AZAL uses one CL-44, taken from Buffalo Airways, to convey bulky oil equipment.
