Aircraft component smuggling destined for Angola exposed in Belorus
Published:
1/4/2000
It seems that December was a busy month for smugglers of avionics and aircraft parts in the former Soviet Union, following reports earlier in the month of avionic thefts from the Russian Air Force in the Far East.
In Belorus, the State Security Committee (still called the KGB), reported that it had seized components and armaments for Mi-8 and Mi-24s, valued at $10m. According to the head of the KGB counter intelligence department, the illegal exports, disguised as civilian parts, were detained at the Machulishchi airport, near Minsk, and were destined for Angola aboard an Il-76, belonging to Bulgarian carrier, Rila Airlines. A KGB source, cited by Military News, further claimed that Moscow-based company, Delta-2, and Minsk-based, Milva, were also involved.
