Airport opens

New airport opens in the Far East

A new airport has opened in Okha, a city in the Far Eastern Sakhalin region. Already dubbed ‘the northern gates", the airport will begin official operations on 5th January 2000, having opened three days before the New Year. Funded primarily by the regional oil company, Sakhalinmorneftegaz, but with the involvement of the regional government, the airport cost 20m rubles ($770,000) to construct, with additional funding of 6m rubles for equipping it. The principle user of the airport will be Sakhalinskie Aviatrassy, operating form its base at Yuzkno Sakhalinsk.
