Ukraine to overhaul three aircraft

Ukraine still having problems funding air force overhauls

Published: 11/16/1999

The rather dire state of affairs for the Ukrainian Air Force has been illustrated by an announcement by the Ministry of Defence that it currently intend to overhaul only three aircraft, including an MiG-29 (one of 173) and Su-25 (one of 36), belonging to the Ukrainian Air Force, with confirmation expected next month. It is anticipated that the overhaul will extend the lifespan of the aircraft to 2015. According to the Ministry of Defence it seems unlikely that Ukraine will adopt any new aircraft in the foreseeable future or start replacing its aging fleet before 2010. As yet the Ukraine has not decided on replacements, but it plans to adopt aircraft with substantial offset production and according to the MOD, is currently in discussions with Russia, France and Israel.
