Malev all set for the millennium

Malév, the Hungarian national airline and LRI, the operators of Ferihegy airport, have said that they have completed their preparations for Year 2000 compliance. LRI said it had invested Ft1.35 billion ($5.6 m) on its preparations, while Malév had spent Ft300m ($1.25m). József Orbán, Year 2000 project manager at LRI, confirmed that Ferihegy's air traffic service and control has been registered as Category I (out of three) with the International Air Transport Association (IATA). On 1st January, 1999, 700 aircraft flew through Hungary's airspace. This year, this is expected to fall to 500. According to spokesman, Miklós Bencze, Malév will have no flights in the air during the midnight period of 31st December – 1st January. The sole flight due for that period, the 11.10pm Malév flight 262 to Thessaloniki, will be rescheduled to 9.10 pm.
