Bankrupt airport gets new lease of life

Gazprom begins reconstruction of airport in central Russia

Published: 11/2/1999

It seems that Gazprom is yet again in the airport business (www.concise.org 15th August 1999). The Russian news agency AK&M reports that in 2000 according to Semen Shershnev, the General Director of the reconstruction directorate with OAO Gaztorgpromstroi, Gazprom will start reconstruction of the bankrupt Grabtsevo airport 150 km south of Moscow near the city of Kaluga in the Kaluzhskaya Oblast. According to Shershnev, they will be rebuilding and extending the existing runway, reconstructing the airport's infrastructure, as well as building apartments and social facilities for the airport's 200 employees. The main activity of the airport will be transporting Gazprom employees from Russia's central regions. The cost of the project was not revealed, but Shershnev did say that the first flights are expected to start at the end of 2001.
