New airport to service Russian Far East

Undisclosed Russian and Chinese commercial interests collaborate on Chinese airport

The construction of a new airport is reported to have started in the Chinese city of Suifenhe, some 150 km to the north of Vladivostok. The airport is intended to increase the trade volume between China and Russia. Undisclosed commercial companies are financing the $17m project and a highway to the airport has already been constructed according to reports. The first phase of construction is estimated be completed by July 2000. When the second phase is finished, the airport will be able to receive aircraft of the Tu-154 type.
