Yakutiya flight problems

Problems with engines for operators in Yakutiya

Published: 10/21/1999

Two more accidents have been reported in Yakutiya, following earlier reports of landing gear problems on a Tu-154 (www.concise.org 7th October 1999) involving a cargo Il-76, flying from Novosibirsk to Mirny. The hydraulic pump belonging to the fourth engine failed, obliging the crew to shut down the engine. The plane reached its destination safely, using three engines. The third incident happened on October 7th, during the take-off of a Tu-154M, flying from Nerungi to Moscow, with 35 passengers on board. One of the engines failed and began to breakup. The crew was able to abort the take-off. Polyarny Airlines, which owns the Tu-154M, said that the engine in question had been leased temporarily from the Vnukovo repair plant, while another was being repaired. An investigation is underway.
