Azerbaijan invests for growth

Baku's air traffic control awaits arrival of new equipment

Published: 9/28/1999

Founded in 1996 Azeraeronavigatsiya was created as part of the state-owned Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL), in an effort to improve Baku's air traffic control and attract investment in the city's airport. Now employing 620 people, Azeraeronavigatsiya covers Baku's airspace and in 1997 the organisation began the process to modernise its equipment. In 2001, German company, Airsys ATM, will install an automated ATC system to meet Azerbaijan's growth in air traffic of 3-5% annually. In 2000, 196 of Azeraeronavigatsiya's staff will be trained in European training centres, to ensure a thorough grounding in the new technology in addition to the training provided by Airsys ATM, according to the organisation. While strikes are prohibited by law in Azerbaijan, it seems unlikely to experience the kind of protests by other air traffic controllers in the CIS. Wages average $200 per month and are paid on time.
