Rosvooruzheniye and Sukhoi remain tightlipped over contract with China

Ishayev accused of indiscretion over Su-30K deal

Published: 8/17/1999

The state-owned arms exporting agency, Rosvooruzheniye, and Sukhoi have refuted the recent statement made by Victor Ishayev, governor of the Khabarovsk region, who announced the signing of a $2 billion contract, comprising the purchase by China of sixty Su-30ks (www.concise.org July 7th 1999 and June 16th 1999). According to Sukhoi, under an agreement between Russia and China, it was agreed not to disclose details of the military-technical cooperation. Ishayev"s announcement could potentially undermine the transaction. Sukhoi alleges that he may have been prompted to break the news about the contract owing to the forthcoming autumn elections to appoint a new governor of the region. The order, which is to be fulfilled by the aviation plant in Komsomolsk-On-Amur, will result in new jobs, so reflecting well on Ishayev.
