US military aid to Georgia?

US Secretary of Defence promises helicopters to Georgia

Published: 8/9/1999

US Secretary of Defence William Cohen has stated in Tbilisi, Georgia, that by the end of 1999 the US will hand out to Georgia six Bell Iroquois helicopters for the purpose of patrolling the Georgian state border. According to Cohen, in 2000 the US will grant Georgia four more helicopters of this type as spare parts for the six aircraft. Cohen noted that the US will also assist Tbilisi with preparing Georgian military officers, reforming the country's armed forces, and enforcing control of its state border. Given the recent tensions between Russia and Georgia, although patched up of late, this move although small is unlikely to go down well in Moscow given their belief this is very much their backyard.
