According to RosBusiness Consulting, on July 17th 1999, an An-124-100 was scheduled to complete a check flight from Moscow to Barnaul, in Krasnoyarsk. The flight was planned as part of the final stage in the complete overhaul of the airport's runway. It will be the first time that an aircraft of this size, with 180 tons of cargo on board, will land on the runway. The test landing will enable a final decision to be made on the quality of the asphalt concrete layer of the runway and the airport's ability to service heavy aircraft.
In 1998, the Air Register declared Barnaul aiport to be in an emergency condition. In particular, two thirds of the runway was in a critical state and the airfield lights' lifetime had expired. The renovation project was developed by the Krasnoyarsk Institute, Sibaeroproyekt. The first stage involved the overhaul of the 2,500m runway. To reduce costs and keep flights going, it was decided to use the asphalt concrete as a surface layer. During the second stage, the runway was extended by 350m and new Czech lighting equipment was installed. The final stage will be completed in September 1999, when the taxiways will be repaired and widened from 22m to 50m, and the apron will be enlarged.
The construction of the international sector of the airport is also scheduled for completion during 1999. The total cost of the reconstruction is estimated to be 100m roubles, financed from the regional budget.
