Most of Russia's computer systems not ready for 2000

Further reports of Russia's Year 2000 compliance problems

Published: 7/13/1999

A report in USA Today, citing ITAR-Tass, claims that only one-third of Russia's critical computer systems are Year 2000 compliant. It further claims that it is unlikely that the government will have sufficient funds to prepare the remainder in time for the millennium. According to the report, officials from the Finance Ministry told a cabinet meeting that Russia needs at least $187m to complete the task. It added that, although the new estimates were significantly lower than previous figures, quoted as being $1 - $3 billion, the money will still be hard to find. Mikhail Kasyanov, Finance Minister, was reported as commenting that the government would probably prioritise the defence and security sectors.
