New head for new aviation agency

Changes at the top of Russian air authorities bring in air force general

Published: 6/23/1999

On June 18th 1999, General Andreyev was appointed as the new Director of the Federal Air Transport Authority of Russia (formerly known as Federal Aviation Service or FAS) General Andreyev succeeds Mr Gennady Zaitsev, who had been the Director of the FAS for the last three years. The replacement was expected, following the presidential decree, on May 25th 1999, concerning the structure of the federal agencies, when the new name for the Russian aviation authority was confirmed. General Andreyev was the commander of the Air Defense Air Forces of Russia until it was reorganised within the structure of the Russian Air Force. Andreyev was apparently asked to stay on within the new structure, but retired according to Concise's sources due to the fact that he was reluctant to work with the commander of the air force Kornukov. Andreyev is about 60 years old and is a professional military pilot who flew right up to his resignation according to reports. During his career he flew both fighters and transport aircraft. Within the air force he is regarded as a 'good and reasonable manager' who gets on well with his subordinates.
