Aeroflot delays restart of flights to Belgrade

Hungarian approval required for the resumption of flights

Published: 6/23/1999

According to a report in Reuters June 23rd, Aeroflot has been forced to delay resuming flights to the Yugoslav capital Belgrade. Aeroflot has blamed the delay on Hungary, which it said had not yet approved flights through its air space en route to Belgrade. “To date Hungarian aviation authorities have not given permission for Aeroflot to carry out passenger flights to Yugoslavia over its territory,” the company said in a statement. Aeroflot said last week that it expected to resume flights on its Moscow-Belgrade route on June 23. Aeroflot was forced to scrap flights to Belgrade in late March after NATO began its air campaign against Serbia and banned civilian aircraft from flying over Yugoslav territory. Since that time the carrier has flown Belgrade-bound passengers into Budapest and then by bus into Yugoslavia.
