L-159 order still on the table

Slovakia and the Czech Republic continue to talk, but the numbers shrink (178 words)

Published: 9/27/2001

Talks are continuing between Slovakia and the Czech Republic regarding the acquisition of between 12-24 L-159s from Aero Vodochody. Discussions recently took place between senior members of the Czech Ministry of Defence and their Slovakian counterparts, the former having proposed giving up half of its order for 72 aircraft earlier this year, both to allow Slovakian demand to be filled and to reduce its own commitment. The proposed transaction has raised concerns for Aero Vodochody as it had anticipated the sales to Slovakia to be additional sales over deliveries to the domestic market. The Boeing-controlled producer is keenly aware of the need to sell at least 170 aircraft in order to make the programme viable. The forecast Slovakian order has also considerably shrunk since the beginning of the year, when sources cited 45 aircraft under the requirement for a light fighter/trainer, which was first announced in June 1999, but delayed largely owing to financing problems for the Slovak government.
