BA may follow Swissair and Sabena to Domodedovo

Sheremetyevo stands to lost yet more custom (153 words)
Published:
8/13/2001
British Airways (BA) has said that it is considering a move from Sheremetyevo to Domodedovo Airport, thereby joining recent movers, Swissair, Sabena and Air Malta. Lufthansa has been rumoured to be planning a similar move in the future.
The loss of BA would be a severe blow to Sheremetyevo - and even more so if Lufthansa follows suit - given that this would give Domodedovo the status that it craves - that of an airport capable of providing full connections to major international and domestic destinations. For Aeroflot, any potential diversion of traffic from its major hub would only serve to weaken its strategy of regional dominance within an international alliance. However, since Domodedovo is operating at almost full capacity and wants to avoid overcrowding, it has said that it will only welcome new customers next year, once capacity has increased.
