Burma in negotiations over MiG contract

Deal riddled with political sensitivity (116 words)

Published: 8/13/2001

A delegation from the Russian Ministry of Defence is understood to be continuing negotiations with the government of Myanmar (Burma), over the purchase of ten MiG-29s, to replace its Chinese fighters. Information on the detail of the contract remains sketchy. Echoing RSK MiG's earlier reluctance to confirm the probable contract, the MoD is reported to be sensitive to both US and Chinese reaction to the $130-150m contract for eight single seat aircraft and two MiG-29UBs. The reticence is hardly surprising as it challenges both US sanctions against the hard line military regime and the Chinese role as major arms supplier to the SE Asian nation.
