Express carrier DHL has reported its activities in Russia and the CIS in 2000 as being better than expected, with revenues from the latter increasing by 14% (instead of the 10% forecasted) and those of the former increasing 16% (against forecasts of 12%).
The improvement is explained by the company as being due to the opening of 10 new agents in Yakutsk, Magadan, Achinsk, Ivanov, Kostroma and Smolensk, thereby giving DHL International more than 100 representative offices in Russia, covering 450 cities. DHL International has also invested $5m in: opening 2 new customs terminals in Kiev and Almaty; modernising its customs terminals in St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk and Vladivostok; and moving to new offices in Moscow and Nakhodka.
2000 has also seen DHL strengthening its presence in the Ukrainian market with the signing of a co-operation agreement with Ukrpochta (Ukrainian Post), giving access to 16,000 post offices, under a joint brand name - Ukrainian Post-DHL. DHL has signed a similar agreement with Belpochta (Belarus Post).
In 2001, DHL forecasts a 10-12% increase in its Russian revenues. The company plans to open further new offices in a number of areas, including Krasnodar. It intends to strengthen its presence in the growing Sakhalin region, where it believes oil activity will stimulate demand. A new express centre is to be opened in Moscow in the spring, at Tverskaya-Yamskaya Street.
