North eastern carrier runs out of fuel

Passengers delayed over a month (140 words)

Published: 12/1/2000

Cargo and passenger carrier Chukotavia, in North East Russia's Chukotsky region, has had to stop its regional flights due to lack of fuel. Leaving passengers stranded in cramped conditions in the region's airport, with some having waited for flights since early November according to reports. According to the Chukotsky region government, the fuel reserve owned by the airline for regional flights was sold to Domodedovo Airlines in the summer, due to poor reserve planning by Chukotavia. The regional authorities say they have a certain amount of fuel for emergencies, but it cannot be released without federal approval. Chukotavia has managed to find some fuel acquiring 20 tons from unknown sources to make ambulance flights. The situation however, remains critical and was awaiting the return of the regional governor Mr. Nazarov from Moscow on the 30th of November.
