Non-payment of overflight fees makes Iran see red

Overflight dispute hots up between Iran and the Ukraine

Published: 2/3/2000

It appears that Iran and the Ukraine may have reached a climax in a dispute over payment of fees by Ukrainian carriers for overflying Iran. According to reports, over $1.1m is owed by airlines, with the national carrier, Ukrainian Airlines, accounting for $787,000 of the total. Its non-payment has led the Iran to threaten the possible suspension of overflight rights for the Ukraine unless the debt is paid. The Ukrainian Ministry of Transport has counter claimed that the Iran owes the Ukraine"s Donbass-Eastern Airlines, based in Donetsk, $780,000 as a result of non-payment of leasing charges by Iranian airlines, Bonyard and Saffat. It believes that the two debts should be offset and normal relations restored.
