It seems that, following the cancellation of sanctions, the Libyans remain loyal to the Russians, despite plans to buy aircraft elsewhere. On 23rd January in Tripoli, the General Director of Libyan Airlines reported that the company plans to modernise its fleet by acquiring an unspecified number of cargo and passenger Russian-made aircraft.
Sirocco, the Egyptian leasing vehicle controlled by Dr Ibrahim Kamal, recently escorted the Libyans on a visit to Ulyanovsk and discussed the possibility of orders and financing for 30 Tu-204 aircraft. The Libyans have also been reported to be involved actively in the development of the MiG-110 twin turboprop, to be produced at Sokol and, from kits, in Austria, according to reports, with the suggestion that the Libyan President"s son may run the Austrian company. Kazan has also reported orders from Libya, for helicopters, including the Mi-14.
