Long expected Ka-31 order confirmed by India
Published:
1/6/2000
India has finally decided to buy the Ka-31 early warning radar helicopter for its Navy, according to a statement made by George Fernandes, Minister of Defence, in the Indian Parliament on 16th December 1999.
Surprisingly, he added that the long experience of Kamov helicopters, which the Navy has acquired since 1981, using 10 Ka-28s, meant the helicopters could be adopted without undergoing preliminary evaluation in the ‘equatorial zone". The cost of the four helicopters and support package is set at $55.8m, to be paid in instalments as the helicopters are delivered.
The confirmation of the purchase by the Indian government ends speculation of a potential purchase of three Ka-31s, which, according to unconfirmed reports, were supposed to have been ordered in 1996.
