Black boxes stolen

Ukrainian carrier's aircraft damaged and looted on the ground

Published: 1/4/2000

Nine An-2 and L-410 belonging to Ukrainian carrier Universal-Avia were seriously damaged and looted while on the ground at the airport of Khmelnitsky in the Ukraine, according to Victor Mazur General Director of the airline. Damage to the aircraft included holes created by axe blows and the thefts included radios, pilot and passenger seats and even the aircraft"s black boxes. For the struggling airline, the $90,000 required to repair the aircraft and replace stolen equipment will be extremely difficult to raise according to the Mazur. Who added they had not paid wages for over two years. The reasons for the attack are unclear, although it appears that local airline rivalry may be the cause according to reports.
