Leasing scheme for Tu-214 proves elusive

Tu-214 on brink of certification, but still no firm deals

Published: 12/17/1999

According to Sergey Kogogin, assistant to the Prime Minister of Tatarstan, the KAPO-produced Tu-214 should be certified by the end of the year. He added that, to date, the aircraft had successfully passed all its certification tests and that Filev, General Director of Sibir, is interested in acquiring 20 Tu-214s. Earlier reports had suggested that a complex leasing agreement had been devised by Avialeasing, under which Sibir will be leased three Tu-214s from KAPO. Twenty seems an optimistic figure in this context, compounded by Kogogin"s indication that the leasing scheme may not, indeed, be finalised, citing a lack of readiness on the part of the Tatarstan banks.
