Tension eases between Russia and Kazakhstan over Proton

Kazakhstan rejects calls for Baikonur closure

Published: 12/17/1999

The détente between Kazakhstan and Russia over Baikonur continues, with a call by Meribek Moldbekov, Chairman of the Kazakhstan Space Agency, for an “objective" evaluation of the risks inherent in Russia"s use of the cosmodrome. While he rejected calls for the facility"s immediate closure, he commented that Russia itself might choose to abandon it, perhaps as early as 2005. According to Moldbekov, Russia has already paid some $50m in rent for the cosmodrome in 1999 and will supply good worth an additional $65m before the end of the year. Menwhile, Nurlan Utembaev, Deputy Chairman confirmed that, next month, talks will be held with Russia on the expansion of Kazakhstan"s role in commercial space launches from Baikonur.
