Vasily Yushchenko, General Director of Bryansk Airlines, north of the Ukrainian border, has said that money invested in developing the airport over the last ten years is starting to pay off. The runway, which was extended by 300m in 1996, can now handle aircraft with weights over 20 tons such as the Il-76 and Tu-154. Passenger and cargo flights connect Bryansk with Turkey, Bulgaria and Italy. Flights from Korea and China have begun, with 20 Il-76s flights from China in November alone.
According to Yushchenko, Bryansk Airlines intends to develop international traffic, with passenger flights to Tel-Aviv planned in the short term. He recognizes that the airport will have to improve its facilities for foreign passenger. Domestic routes are also being developed. Regular flights from Nizhnevartovsk began in January 1999 using a Tu-154, in addition to flights from Noyabrsk, in the Tyumen region. The management also plans according to reports,to resume flights to Baku, Yerevan, Volgograd, Samara and Kaliningrad. Flights to Sochi may be reinstated next summer.
In addition, Byransk"s specialized aircraft have been busy dealing with forest fires, fertilizing agricultural fields and undertaking pest control.
