Israel to launch commercial satellite

Russia gets Israeli satellite launch, but it is likely to be the last

Published: 12/12/1999

Russia has said that it will launch Israel"s military satellite within the next few months. According to reports in the Israeli press, the project has been given the go-ahead by Israel"s Prime Minister and the Russian MoD. It is claimed that the US accepts Israel"s assurance that the satellite will be used for commercial purposes. Russia will host the launch as a result of the 1997 fire at Israel Aircraft Industries launch facilities, where Israel"s first military satellite was launched in 1995. However, this is likely to be the only such deal, as Israel intends to rebuild its capabilities within the next three years.
