New routes could save one hour of travel time

Discussions continue over polar routes between Russian and the US

Published: 12/12/1999

Vladimir Andreev, Head of the FSVT, has said that Russia and the USA are continuing to discuss cross-polar routes. Some 44 test cross polar flights to the US from South-eastern Asia have been undertaken over the last two years, demonstrating that flight times are reduced by around one hour. This is a significant saving in terms of fuel consumption. United Airlines, Delta, North Western Airlines and Russian operators have all participated in the trials, but Andreev contends that more experience of these complicated routes is needed before they are opened. This is particularly important in terms of aircraft control as it crosses the North Pole. The FSVT has therefore decided to extend the test period for a further six months from 1st January 2000.
