Supersonic test flights completed

Published: 5/22/1998

Russian and US aviation specialists say they had successfully completed 19 joint test flights of the Tu-144LL supersonic flying laboratory. Alexander Pukhov, the Tu-144 chief designer, told a news conference that "we are satisfied that we have participated in the unique research programme in collaboration with the US space agency NASA and Boeing and IBP." The tests were as part of research into a second generation supersonic airliner. According to designers, such an aircraft will be able to carry 300 passengers and fly at 2,400 km/h, and market research suggests that by the year 2015 there will be a demand for over 500 such aircraft, the production of which might cost over $200bns. Robert Spitzer, vice-president of the Boeing Commercial Airplane group, said the company will not use the results of the test flights to design supersonic bombers. (IN598.9) (VZ)
