Helicopter used to get over frozen lake

North Western carrier opens winter helicopter route

Published: 12/6/1999

The former firefighting center, North-Western Forest Airbase has launched another new flight. Following the launch, on November 29th, of the flight from Petrozavodsk to Vyartsilya, it has begun to operate an Mi-8 on the route Petrozavodsk-Pudozh. It plans to replace the Mi-8 with an An-2 in due course. The new flight lasts 55 minutes, compared to eight hours by bus. According to the company, prices have been substantially subsidized by the Karelia government, and can be bought for 105 rubles ($4), just 7 rubles more than for a bus ticket. Three weekly flights will operate until Onezhskoye Lake thaws in the spring. Associated articles www.concise.org 19th November 1999
