Military order more aircraft

Helicopter upgrade orders increase

According to a source in the Department of Armament at the Russian Ministry of Defence, quoted in Military News on 22nd November 1999, this year"s orders for the upgrading of both the Mi-8 and the Mi-24 have been doubled in 1999. No exact figures were provided. According to Military News, the decision was made after General Anatoly Kvashnin, Head of the army"s general staff, and Lieutenant-Colonel Anatoly Sitnov, responsible for army equipment, flew in an upgraded Mi-8 - designated as the Mi-8N - during a visit to Northern Caucasus. Mi-8N is equipped with a “modern navigational and targeting system", enabling night operation. Vladimir Stekolnikov, Deputy General Designer at the Mil plant, said that the upgrade would be undertaken at Rosvertol, Rostov-On-Don.
