Ex fire fighters go into the airline business

New helicopter route over the Russian-Finnish border

Published: 11/19/1999

On October 28th, the North-Western Forest Airbase launched a new flight from Petrozavodsk to Vyartsilya in Finland. This civilian operator started life as a fire-fighting unit in the heavily forested region. Thousands of people cross the border guards point in Vyartsilya from both Russia and Finland. A Mi-8 can make the connection to Petrozavodsk in 70 minutes. However, foreign citizens pay 530 Finnish marks (around $100) for the trip, while Russians are charged 180 Finnish marks.
