Privatisation still awaited

Armenia has no firm timetable for privatisation of Armenian Airlines

Published: 10/26/1999

Yervand Zakharyan, Armenian Minister of Transport, has insisted that the privatization of Armenian Airlines, despite plans approved by the government as far back as July 1997,is not on the government's agenda. He confirmed that the appointment of a permanent General Manager was being discussed after considerable upheaval in the company's management over the last year. To improve the company's financial condition the government has authorized an increase in the company's capital of 20-25% and funds raised will be used to renovate the airline's fleet. The government is expected to make a final decision regarding privatization by the end of the year. Based at Zvartnots Airport in Yerevan, the airline employs 1200 people and had a fleet of 18 aircraft including a leased A-310-200.
