Published: 10/26/1999

Kazan International Airport on 22nd October 1999 opened its new $15m runway according to the airport's General Director, Azat Khakimullin. It can now service a wide range of aircraft including the Boeing 747 and Airbus 310 according to Khakimullin, on the 3,836m runway, which is 45m wide and is 0.96m thick with a concrete layer of 46cm. Equipment bought for the new runway will now be used for the reconstruction and expansion of the existing runway, built 20 years ago. The installation of an electronic air traffic control system, made by French company, Thomson CSF, is expected to be completed by May 2000 allowing the airport to upgrade from its current visual landing status. This system includes new radar including a TPAK-2300 registering aircraft within a 400 km range and an instrument landing system.
