MiG-31 upgrades improve Air Force capability

MiG-31BMs to fly soon at Gromov LII Institute

Published: 10/25/1999

The Gromov LII Institute is to flight test two upgraded MiG-31BM fighters. The upgrade of another aircraft will follow soon, with a further ten anticipated in 2000. The MiG-31BM has been developed as a defence suppression variant of the MiG-31B and has been upgraded to carry a wide range of weaponry including additional air-to-air missiles and anti radar missiles. The upgrade of the MiG 31s is part of the Russian Air Force's programme to improve defence capabilities at lower cost than acquiring new aircraft. The air force took delivery of 377 aircraft since 1982. Gromov LII is also currently testing refurbished MiG-29 SMT and MiG-29 UBT aircraft for possible applications in strike missions. In total, Russia has produced over 1500 MiG-29 aircraft. The upgrade of the $25m MIG-29 will cost approximately $4m.
