Su-24Ms for the Russian Air Force in Crimea

Upgrading of Black Sea strike capability with replacement of Su-17 with Su-24M

Published: 10/4/1999

In October 1999, Russia will start replacing aging Su-17s in its fleet on the Black Sea in Crimea with the more modern SU-24M. Sergey Nagoryansky, Press Secretary of Ukrainian Ministry of Defence said that Ukraine would test all new aircraft to ensure they cannot be used to carry nuclear weapons. Currently the 43rd fighter squadron of Black Sea Fleet has 22 SU-17s out of the 50 reported to be remaining in service, based at the airbase in Simferopol. The variable geometry SU-24M was introduced into service with the Russian Air Force and Naval Aviation in 1983, to perform a variety of all weather strike, reconnaissance and EW roles.
