Ilavia grounded

Ilyushin associated carrier grounded by the FSVT for time expired engines

Published: 9/27/1999

The FSVT have taken action against a company associated with the Ilyushin Design Bureau regarding the use of time expired engines on a Il-76 operated by it. Moscow based cargo carrier Ilavia , which operates a mixed fleet of Il-76s and Il-18s was grounded by the FSVT for re-engining a Il-76TD with time expired DK-30K engines. According to reports, the aircraft, which was owned by small airline Ekspark, was damaged in a crash in 1995 and Ilavia had agreed to overhaul it at no cost, in return for 400 hours of operation. It appears however, according to Flight International, that the two parties then became involved in a dispute, which resulted in Ilavia being reported to the FSVT for operating the aircraft beyond the agreed 400 hours and above permitted takeoff weights. The FSVT responded by grounding the airline after discovering the installation of the time expired engines acquired for $9000 a piece.
