Trade union protest the condition of the airline sector

Air crew demand increases in pensions and resolution of the airline sector's problems

Published: 8/31/1999

On August 19th 1999, representatives of the Russian flight crew trade union picketed the Russian Government. According to Pravda, they were demanding an increase in the pensions of civilian aviation employees, the protection of the domestic aviation industry, and that airlines' financial affairs be put in order. According to the trade union, the law enabling the payment of higher pensions to pilots, which was signed on May 1st 1999, is unworkable. Vasily Barchuk, the government's representative, acknowledged that this was the case. Barchuk was formerly head of the Pension Fund. He assured the trade union that pensions payable to veteran pilots would be recalculated, starting from May 1st 1999, so liquidating the debt owed.
