Uzbekistan gains new international airports

Uzbek airports reach international standards

Published: 8/23/1999

Two more Uzbek airports, Bukhara and Urgench, have been categorised as reaching international standards. Valentin Gordiyenko, Deputy Director General of Uzbekistan Airways, the national carrier, confirmed that both airports, together with Samarkand, which had previously been granted international status, are now being rebuilt, in order to improve passenger safety and convenience. He added that Uzbekistan Airways, under an agreement concluded between the governments of Japan and Uzbekistan, received a loan, specifically for this purpose. According to Gordiyenko, passenger servicing, information and customs and passport control at Tashkent, Samarkand, Urgench and Bukhara airports all now meet international standards.
