Privatisation of Balkan Airlines goes ahead

Syria, Lebanon and Libya protest against sale of Balkan Airlines to Israeli consortium

Published: 7/15/1999

Following speculation last month (Concise 6/24/99) over the privatisation of Bulgaria"s Balkan Airlines, it would appear that the Israeli consortium, made up of Zeevi H & Knafaim and Arkia, have emerged as victors. Rumoured to have been favoured, alongside Air Bulgaria, as the most viable candidates among the four considered, the sale has nevertheless met with protest from some quarters. According to a report in RosBusiness Consulting, Syria has joined Lebanon and Libya in an economic boycott of Balkan Airlines. The report states that Syria"s Minister of Transport has signed a decree banning all cooperation with the airline and terminating all current agreements.
