Walter's retrofit business grows in the face of future uncertainty

Walter retrofits of the M-601 turboprop continue to grow, but future development of the engine may be hindered by lack of funds
Published:

For Czech engine manufacturer Walter A.S., privatisation still remains to be achieved despite being targeted for completion in late 1998. The company however, continues to develop sales of new and used M-601 turboprop engines in addition to upgrading engines for its existing customer base.
The financial crisis Russia in 1998 had a significant impact on the company's sales. However, despite these problems, the company has continued to develop its retrofitting business. To date at least five different types has been retrofitted with M-601s (www.concise.org 21st May 1999). The most recent installation taking place in the Philippines.Walter also has contracts for an additional 13 engines to be delivered to Air Wolf, who service the Dole Fruit Company. In New Zealand installations of the engine on the PAC Fletcher Fu-24s agricultural aircraft are also being carried out in New Zealand at a rate of one aircraft per month.Since it was first assembled in New Zealand in 1964, the Fu-24 has been sold to over 300 customers in Australasia and elsewhere.
In an effort to upgrade the engine's capabilities, Walter is in the process of developing improved hot-and-high operation of the M-601. Once the new engine is available the company will focus on retrofitting on twin engine business turboprops.
Future developments would involve the increase of the engine's power, but the task of achieving significant gains will require extensive modification and further investment. Without the latter Walter may be unable to develop the engine further.
