Desperate situation leads to desperate measures

Airline employees mount hunger strike to get management to pay back wages

Published: 6/24/1999

Russian information agency, RosBusiness Consult, has reported that, on June 19th 1999, 34 NAK Sakha-Avia technicians in Yakutsk were on hunger strike. One of them has been admitted to hospital, owing to his deteriorating condition. The other hunger strikers have decided to continue the strike, demanding that the airline's management pay them salaries owed for the last 18 months. Despite the desperate measures of these men, the report notes that the strike has had no impact on the airline's flight schedule. The airline is based in Yakutsk , formerly known as Yakutskaviatrans ,and has operated 2 Airbus A-310-200s within its fleet, providing a number of scheduled long haul flights from its base to destinations in Russia, as well as international charter flights for cargo and passengers.
