Russia trades debt for aerospace exports

Positive noises on Austrian involvement in Russian aerospace

Published: 6/24/1999

During a visit to Austria, the Russian Deputy Prime Minister, Ms. Valentina Matviyenko, has asked Austrian officials to consider Moscow's proposal to pay part of its debt with deliveries of aviation and military equipment. The former Soviet Union accumulated the debt, amounting to some $2.5 billion with Austria. While Austria is not seeking to force a solution to the problem, the possibility of a partial “write-off” of the debt, through deliveries of aviation and military equipment, was considered during the course of the visit according to Prime-TASS. In talks with Austria business leaders, Matviyenko heard Mr Leopold Madertaner, President of the Federal Chamber of Economics, express his member's interest in a number of projects relating to the joint production of aviation equipment.
