Air fares rise by 40%

Air fares start to rise again

Published: 6/7/1999

As recently reported by operators such as Aeroflot and Transaero, air fares in Russia are beginning to rise. The rises are in response to the dramatic decline in the value of the rouble and the fact that prices have been frozen or even cut in rouble terms over the last 8 months. Tariffs for air tickets for all airlines increased on average by 40% over the past month, according to Rifat Shaikhutdinov, director general of the air traffic agency. Prices for flying from Moscow showed the highest increases. Even the weaker players such as Vnukovo are now reporting significant price hikes with fares increasing by 70%.
